LIVIA (LIVIA PROJECT)

LIVIA is the italian acronym for Environmental Laboratory for Environmental Impact Assessment.
The main purpose of the first phase the project (ended in 1994) was the collection and use of computer based tools, such as data base management systems, geographical information systems, simulation, optimization and forecasting models, expert systems and interactive, symbolic and graphical user interfaces, to support environmental impact assessment in practical applications.

The result of the project is a laboratory that was initially set up at Politecnico di Milano (Italy) and that was then moved to Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei's headquarters (Corso Magenta 63 - Milano).
The laboratory includes a large modelbase and several local databases, and provides the necessary tools to build partially and fully integrated systems. The attention was focused on simulation models which are implemented on computers and that provide powerful and versatile tools for the assessment of potential impacts of planned actions.
